Preparing the Future Generation of Doctors in Order to Change the World

It is important to prepare for the future in order to create change in the world. YLPHM does this for the worlds of healthcare and public health.

The Young Leaders of Public Health and Medicine (YLPHM) is a youth medical initiative that aspires to improve the world through providing future doctors and public health officials with the experience, opportunities, and leadership skills they need to succeed. Through a common love for medicine and public health, the organization works to educate and serve their community. YLPHM promises to provide current students the experience they need to succeed in order to revolutionize and transform the worlds of healthcare and public health.

Their mission statements are as follows:

1. Contributing towards our communities through service projects and volunteering efforts.

2. Localizing and making chapters so even those without access to technology can become involved in the medical and scientific community.

3. Coming together with others through a common love for medicine and public health to make educational medical content.

4. Provide resources, opportunities, and connections to premed and public health students, so they can succeed in their respective fields.

Pratiksha Malayil, 14, and Alina Nodrat, 15, are from Hicksville, New York. They are the founders behind this organization. First, Pratiksha wanted create a HOSA chapter in their school but then realized this would be a problem since HOSA is not very active in Long Island. Instead, she decided to create a medical club that was focused on collaboration and community instead of competition, unlike HOSA. The founders wanted people to be able to educate, lead, serve, and change the world through this organization. YLPHM hopes to change the worlds of healthcare and public health. "I also wanted the club to have a focus on public health, because public health is not something we focus on, but it is clearly an important part of society," Pratiksha said. She partnered up with Alina and were able to develop ideas to start this organization.

YLPHM was created only two months ago, yet they were able to become an organization that has rapidly expanded across the country and internationally. The organization have ongoing chapters in Canada and the United States, and even got a citation from their local legislator deeming the organization to be legitimate and creating change within the community. YLPHM have had many successes such as going to their local hospital and dropping off almost 40 pizzas, soda, and cupcakes. "It makes us happy to know that we’ve made some change in the small time we were here." Pratiksha shares.

The organization's current goal is to create more chapters around the nation and to keep expanding. They hope to one day have an online summit where leaders in medicine can take part in leadership and career building workshops to help members of the organization. In the future, they also want to do international service projects and mission trips once we have a lot of members and we become an official nonprofit organization.
