The Future of Women in Medicine

The stereotype of women unable to do well in the medicine field causes young females to strive for even more. Anushka, a 17 year old from Princeton NJ, founded an organization called Girls in White Coats (GiWC). It is a virtual community that provides support and guidance for young women who are passionate about becoming healthcare leaders in the future.

In society, young women are told that they are not as smart and capable compared to men. According to statistics, women are not as highly ranked as men and are paid less. The reality of this field can really discourage women from entering the medical field. Anushka wanted to express that females are just as capable of becoming medical leaders and pursuing their passions by creating this organization. Anushka has a very strong interest in medicine and hopes to empower and support other girls with the same goals as her. With Girls in White Coats, Anushka hopes to help girls achieve their dreams of becoming future medical leaders.

After founding Girls in White Costs, Anushka was able to create a team that is comprised of enthusiastic and powerful girls from all over the world. Together, they have the mission of ending gender disparities in the medical field through empowerment of the next generation of female healthcare professionals.

The organization was created at the start of May. Within that short time, they have already reached almost 3,000 followers on instagram and have had over 400 applicants join their organization. The team has been able to successfully expand Girls in White Coats across social media, as well as received videos from medical professionals to speak about their experiences and give advice/tips for others interested in pursuing a healthcare career. They also just released a proposal form for their Medical Technology Competition that they created recently.

In the future, they plan on creating workshops with tips on how to prepare for interviews, how to score a research position, as well as how to make close connections with professors and teachers. They hope to expand to other countries, and even start chapters at schools. Girl in White Coats want to continue their mission in the future by helping younger children who are interested in medicine get exposure to activities and clubs that may be beneficial for them.

The team have exciting plans for Girls in White Coats and hopes young women around the world will help them in their journey.
